| Greyhound FAQ |
| We hope the following information will be valuable for those interested in adopting a greyhound. |
- Q: How long does a Greyhound live?
A: Most greyhounds live to be 12-14 years old.
- Q: Are Greyhounds good with other animals?
A: It depends on the Greyhound. Through our interactions with our greyhounds, we can tell you which dogs should, or should not, be placed in homes with other animals. If you currently have a dog, we recommend that you bring your dog to meet the prospective greyhound.
- Q: Are Greyhounds good with kids?
A: Most greyhounds get along with children. If you have children, be sure to tell us during our telephone interview that you have children, so we may help find the right match for you.
- Q: How do I adopt a Greyhound through your organization?
A: It starts by filling out our simple contact form. Then a volunteer from our organization will call you for an informal interview. This interview helps us decide if one of our available dogs will match with you and your family. Please be aware, because we are a small organization, we do not always have Greyhounds available for adoption. If that is the case, we may ask you if you would like to be on our adoption list, or may suggest another agency to help you find the right dog for your home.
If we think you might match with one of our dogs, then we will ask you to visit the farm so you can meet your potential Greyhound. It is just as important for the Greyhound to be comfortable with you. Only after your meeting will we determine if you and the Greyhound make a match, and if so, then the final steps of the adoption process will begin.
- Q: How much does it cost to adopt a dog through your organization?
A: Our standard adoption fee is $150. This fee covers a portion of the veterinarian fees that we incur on behalf of the Greyhound, as well as other costs as we care for the Greyhound.
- Q: Do Greyhounds need a lot of room to run free?
A: No, actually Greyhounds are very laid-back. They are sprinters who run 30 second races at the track every 4-5 days. They are well-suited to apartments and small houses as long as you are willing to take them out for a walk a couple of times a day. If you have a completely fenced in area for them to run they will take advantage of it, but it is NOT a necessity.
- Q: Do I need to feed my Greyhound a special diet?
A: Any high quality dog food like Nutro, Pro Plan or Exceed (Sam's Club) will be fine for your Greyhound. A male or large female will eat 3-4 cups of food twice a day. Some of the smaller females will only eat 1½ cups of food twice a day.
